The Art Behind Our Bauhaus Designs
Every design in our store comes from the Bauhaus world. Here's what is printed on them, and where it comes from.
What is the Bauhaus face emblem?
The profile in a circle, built from straight lines and a square eye, comes from the German Bauhaus art school: Oskar Schlemmer designed it in 1922, and the band took it for their posters and sleeves. We print it in several ways:
- Face Emblem Black: the emblem in clean black lines.
- Face Emblem Outline: the same mark as a thin white outline.
- Face Emblem and Wordmark: the half-filled white emblem over the wide lowercase bauhaus wordmark.
- Blood Moon Face: the emblem over a glowing red moon.
- Red Constructivist Face: the emblem rebuilt from red and grey squares, circles and triangles.
- Grey Collage: the emblem in grey panels with the wordmark on a diagonal.
Why are there bats?
Bela Lugosi's Dead Sleeve uses the bat-winged still from the sleeve of the band's 1979 debut single. The image comes from the 1926 silent film The Sorrows of Satan. Bat keeps it simple: a black bat, wings spread. Bela Lugosi's Dead Shadow pairs a stark photo with the song title in looping script.
Which designs have a back print?
- Tour 2022: the face emblem and the four members' names on the front, and eight May 2022 dates on the back, from Pasadena to Tempe.
- Gotham: a banner of bauhaus and gotham over a dark live photo, named for the 1999 live album, with a red geometric starburst on the back.
- Big Truth: a high-contrast face on the front and a scratchy hanging figure with scrawled words on the back.
- Eclipse: a dark scratched drawing on the front and an ink-splash eclipse ring on the back.
Anything for fans of the early days?
Feb 13 Flyer looks like an old photocopied gig flyer, with blocky BAUHAUS letters and a rough drawing of a dancer with a spinning hoop.
